Reflection Section

In the short story named 'Butterflies' by Patricia Grace, a clever girl with plaited hair who lives with her grandparents heads to school. At school, she writes a short story about how she killed all the butterflies, as they are believed to be pest to the cabbage. The teacher believes the butterflies should not be killed as they are beautiful insects. the grandparents then say she must buy her cabbage from the store.

Butterflies talks about the 2 different perspectives between the Grandparent and grand daughter to the teacher at school. The short story conveys a message that different upbringings can cause people to see life differently.

WTE Sentences

Begin with a Preposition

Try starting your sentence with a Preposition. Prepositions are little words indicating movement to position.

in 1989, the Exxon Valdez oil tanker ran off aground off the coast of Alaska.

After the war had ended, a sense of fear surrounded the city.

The -ING Start

Try starting a sentence with with the -ING form of a verb. The rule: when you have finished your -ING phrase, place a comma, then write the rest of the sentence.

Wanting to see peace restored, the UN sent troops to Africa.

Fighting to see the finish, the troops raged on surpassing their limits.


The -ED Start

Try starting a sentence with the -ed form of the verb. It makes for a punchy opening to the sentence.

Undefeated in battle, Alexander the great remains one of history's greatest military leaders.

Astonished by the fragrance, David froze.

The Semi Colon

When you have two independent clauses (two mini-sentences) joined by a conjunction (e.g and, but) you can remove the conjunction and replace it with a semi colon.   

Her entry was dramatic start to the play; her exit came too far soon.

She began to love life; it wouldn't stay like that.

The EM-Dash

The em-dash in English is the long dash. Use the long dash to drop a phrase in a sentence that is at complete odds with the flow of the sentence—way out there—but which adds colour and interest.

The W Start

Try beginning a sentence with a W-word. Here are some: who, while, when, where, what, whereas. The W-start makes writing sound thoughtful and knowledgeable.


When the baking was completed, the ovens were cleaned thoroughly.


When the rain fell, puddles enveloped the vicinity.


Explore the Subject

Accomplished writers use this sentence style. The rule: begin your sentence with the subject then place a comma. Say something interesting about the subject. Place another comma. Then, finish your sentence.

Henry Smith, who was well known for his position against bribery, decided to stand for mayor.


Muhammad Ali, one of the best boxers in all time, stood for his civil rights.

Critical Literacy

 The Film 'Treaty Of Waitangi What Really Happened' Directed by Peter Burger, is about the signing of one of our founding documents. It is a dramatisation of the days leading up to and including the signing. We know this through the chiefs arguing, discussing and eventually signing the Treaty, based on history. We also know threw the films title and voice-over.

Wanaga Reflection

 Text Title:What Really Happened The Treaty Of Waitangi

Text Type: Mockumentary

Text Purpose: To inform the audience about what actually happened at the Treaty of Waitangi.

Date 12/02/21

The Mockumentary named "The Treaty of Waitangi What Really Happened." Is about how the British crown wrote out a treaty and deliver it to the native people of New Zealand/ the Maori. The Mockumentary shows a couple different view points from different characters such as Hone Heke, William Hobson, Kawiti and Tamati Waka Nene. Key points in the story are the Crown creating the treaty that is to be used to allow settlers in Maori land, the arguments between each race due to the Maori worried about they're rights , the Maori chiefs finally signing the treaty, and the crown getting the land they want with a trade-off of the Maori getting tobacco, blankets and expanding they're trade.
