Creating a Treaty

For Social Studies we had to create a class treaty, we were huddled up in a big group and had many problems creating it.

Problems we faced?

  • No one wanted to step up as a leader
  • No communication
  • Adversity when people were talking
  • Drama caused by people
  • Not everyone had a say

What Went Well?
  • It was funny
  • We all wanted to get it done so we agreed.

The most interesting fact I learned was the History behind Christchurch's name.

Hunger Games Music and Audio

 https://sites.google.com/hornby.school.nz/rc-learning-site-2020/courses/film-study

How does music enhance the story?

Keywords - Major, Minor, Tempo, Dynamics, Diegetic Sound.

Brainstorm:

What is happening in the scene?

Describe shot/angles, lighting/colour.

Describe the music used- Major/Minor, tempo, dynamics.

What is the effect on the viewer?

Why do you think the director chose to use this music?

Major Key- Happy, Energetic and Uplifting

Minor key- Sad, lethargic, creepy, angry

Tempo- the speed of the music/fast slow beat

Dynamics- Volume- Loud=Forte, quiet=piano.

Crescendo- Starts off quiet and gets louder, builds tension

Melancholic- Sad

Diminuendo- Starts loud the gets quieter, can be relaxing, make focus , bring down energy

Diegetic Sound- Natural occured audio.

Non Dietgetic Sound- Sound music, or anything sounds added to the scene.

Song 1 - Happy, Relaxing, Upbeat - Fast Tempo

Song 2-  Melancholic, Somber - Slower Tempo

Reaping scene:

Major/Minor

Tempo- Fast/slow/moderate

Dynamics- Crescendo

Description- Starts off quiet and gets louder, slow tempo, minor key.

Effect on Viewer- Hopeful, anxious, scared.

Director Purpose- Put in us in the mood of the children in district 12.

Rues Farewell-

What happens in this scene-Rue is put to rest, dies by a spear. This makes us happy.

Major/Minor-Minor

Tempo- Snails pace slow

Dynamics-Diminuendo

Effect on the viewer- Sorrow, depressed, Melancholic

Directors Purpose- This is done because someone has just passed away, and they were close to the protagonist Katniss Everdeen, Katniss cares because noone volunteered as a tribute for Rue.

In the scene where Rue dies, the technique of music is used to effectively to show the theme of 'Hope and Rebellion'. In this scene we see Rue put to rest by Katniss after she is impaled with a spear by another tribute. The music used makes the audience feel depressed, sorrowful and melancholic through the use of minor chords a slow tempo, and rising falling dynamics. The purpose is too show the relationship between Katniss and Rue. They are friends and Katniss sees Rue like her sister Primrose Everdeen. This works well with the use of the three finger salute which is a symbol of hope from Katniss's District. This shows hope and rebellion as a result of Katniss's actions, the people of District 11 start rioting against the Peace Keepers.

Civil Rights Act Music

This is America: This is a song by Childish Gambino. The song addresses the wider issue of gun violence in the United States, the high rate of mass shootings in the United States, along with other social issues which are commonly alleged to have been results of historically widespread racism and discrimination experienced by African Americans. In my opinion the song is alright but its not my type of proper music.

I Have a Dream: T"A Dream" is a single by rapper Common from the soundtrack to Freedom Writers. It is produced by will.i.am, who also sings the song's chorus. The song heavily samples Martin Luther King Jr.'s historical "I Have a Dream" speech, which relates to the song's lyrics about racism. The single release of "A Dream" includes two will.i.am tracks, "Colors" and "Bus Ride." I dont mind the song but it is the best.

Changes: This song was a rap that many African Americans used to express themselves over things that happen in everyday life. Many rappers such as N.W.A and Notorious B.I.G use rap to express their own situation; the most famous of all rappers is Tupac Shakur. In his songs he mainly talks about gangster rapper’s lifestyles. In the song changes he is expressing the idea that there needs to be change so that poverty and racism that African Americans face every day will stop. He also criticizes that African Americans need to overcome poverty that is facing them. This song is very catchy and lyrical. I like it because of the tempo and rhythm.

Performance Evaluation

Performance Evaluation

What did you perform? I performed I Cry by Usher. I did this because we had to do a song that involves the civil rights act. I chose The song as it talks about the 2020 BLM Protest. It was a solo performance

How did the performance go? The Performance went a bit off as I was gonna sing the whole song but I forgot a couple of parts to it. I also got rid of a part because I didnt practice singing it.

What was challenging about this task? Learning the whole song and trying to perform it alone to others. This is something i'm not very comfortable with

What did you enjoy about the task? I liked learning about the song and performing it in my spare time to have fun..

Hunger Games Lighting and Colour

How Does Lighting & Colour enhance the story?

Keywords- Atmosphere- The Mood, tone, situation and vibe in the airspace, Mood- State of mind and feeling , Location- A certain area and  place.

https://sites.google.com/hornby.school.nz/rc-learning-site-2020/courses/film-study

Brainstorm:

Warm/Cold - Colour pallete.

Bright/Dull -

Natural/Artificial -

  • What is happening in the scene?
  • What types of colours are being used in this location?(Warm/Cold, bright/dull, Natural/Artificial)
  • What effect does this have the viewer?
  • Why has the director used the colours/lighting?
  • What other techniques add to this effect?
Natural Green and Brown

Artificial White and Vibrant Cold Colours

Artificial Blue and Grey

In the film the Hunger Games by Gary Ross lighting is used effectively so show the difference between District 12 and the Capitol. In District 12 we see mainly brown, green and grey these are natural colours. In the Capitol we see artificial, vibrant colours.

This makes us understand has the privilege of futuristic lighting. The director did this too show the theme Rich vs Poor. The power of the Capitol, over District 12 is shown through the use of technology. The lack of opportunity in District 12 is highlighted by their lack of modern technology. Lighting in each location can be compared to the possibility of hope and rebellion setting in each setting.

What have I learned? How to include different themes to the link
How does this work show my learning? This includes all of the lighting possibilities.

Hunger Games Key Points

Link to Venngage
For English we had to create a venngage about Hunger Games and its Key Plot Points.

What am I learning? I am learning how to analyze the plot of a film
How does this work show my learning? This work shows I can understand the key parts of the film The Hunger Games.
What am I wondering as a result of my learning? I am wondering why these are the key points in this movie.

Hunger Games Costumes

 https://sites.google.com/hornby.school.nz/rc-learning-site-2020/courses/film-study

Brainstorm:

What is happening in the scene?

What types of costumes are used in the location?

What effects does this have on the viewer?

Why has the director used these costumes?

What other techniques add to this effect?

The Reaping Scene District 12

The people in district 12 are waiting to be reaped. Description - Old worn out, faded dark colour, used for reaping, doesn't get damaged by the dark colour. In they're best form of clothes to be able to presented in front of the Capitol and the rich, instead of looking poor in front of the others. Men wearing white button up shirts, trousers for older men and shorts for the kids. Women are wearing dresses that go past the knees but not any longer to hit the floor. Hair for men is combed over or slicked back, women hair is all done properly. No accessories on because they are not needed.

Effect on the viewer- It tells us they are poor and only have the basic clothes that are worn and colour faded. They want to be viewed as mannerly, respectful people instead of just coal miners.

Directors Purpose- To show the difference between the Capitol and the districts, The Capitol has wealth and privilege as they have better clothes and variety that has many selection.

Techniques- A wide shot and high angle are used to portray them as weak an vulnerable, it also emphasises the Capitol is more rich and poor looking down at the districts and the wide shot shows them as many.

Arrival Scene- The Capitol residents are waiting for the tributes to arrive.
Describe-Colourful, Vibrant, Exotic, immaculate, co-ordinate, variety. Women wearing colourful vibrant dresses, variety of style, Men wearing suits, skirts, Accessories- Dyed Dogs, Head wear, Hand bags, Make up, earrings. Accessories aren't limited to Gender .
Effect on the viewer-They are wealthy with power privilege and opportunity, not poor, born into wealth and not worried about reaping and working.
Directors Purpose-To highlight the luxuriousness of the Capitol.
Techniques- The setting is, modern vibrant, light, modern architecture, stones, metal, steel, fresh new futuristic

In the reaping scene, costumes are used efficiently to show the theme of 'Rich vs Poor'. In this case 'rich vs poor' means the privilege afforded to people in Panam based on their district. This is demonstrated by the clothing worn by the residents of District 12 during the annual reaping. The clothes uniform like, well worn and bland colours, whilst girls are wearing skirts and or dresses. These are examples of they're best clothing which tells us that they are poor limited to there access to resources. This makes the audience think that although they are poor and can only afford the basics they want to be seen as respectable by the Capitol and other Districts, not just as coal miners. This was done to show the difference between the Capitol and the other Districts- The Capitol has wealth and privilege whilst the people in the Districts have to make do with what they have. This worked well with the use of camera angles. In this shot a high angle and wide shot is used to show the people of district 12 are weaker and more vulnerable under the power of those in the Capitol. This can be juxtaposed to the use of costumes in the Capitol where we see rich vs poor through the extravagance and luxury of the citizens costumes.

Hunger Games Sexxxy Paragraphs

In the reaping scene, camera angles and shots are used efficiently to show the theme of 'Rich vs Poor' In this scene Katniss Everdeen volunteers as tribute to save her sister, this means she must fight in the hunger games. A low angle, dutch tilt is used to show Katniss and Effie Trinket standing on the stage after Katniss volunteers. This is used to make the audience feel dizzy like Katniss who has just chosen to give her life over her sisters Primrose Everdeen. The low angle shot makes the viewer feel weak and vulnerable like the kids watching in District 12. The director did this too help create a bond with the audience and Katniss, this is used to understand the choices of why she makes certain decisions in the film later on. This also shows the theme of Rich vs Poor because the people of the districts have to struggle with the reality of losing family whereas Capitol citizens and representatives don't have to worry about the reaping. Combined with this is the use of costumes. We see the privilege of Capitol citizens in the bright, exotic, and colourful clothing worn by Effie which contrasted to the worn and faded outfits of those in District 12. Overall, the reaping scene shows us Rich vs Poor because it emphasises the privileges of the Capitol and the power they have over the Districts.

In the tribute parade scene, camera angles and shots are used effectively to exhibit the theme of ‘Struggle for Power’. In this scene each tribute from the Districts 1 to 12 are presented through a chariot that rides through the middle of the venue. The chariot ride presents the tributes in a heroic way; this is to build suspense and hype for the tributes. A High angle and extreme long shot are used in this scene. The extreme long shot is used to set the scene and show the environment at a massive scale. The high angle represents the privilege and opportunity the Capitol and President Snow have over the Districts. This makes us understand the power, wealth and privilege that President Snow and the capitol have over the districts as they watch from above with no care about having to be reaped. Coinciding with the shot was the music playing as the scene was introduced. Music in the tribute parade was high key which induced suspense and anticipation to the scene as they rode the chariots. This reminds me of the rich vs poor in the reaping scene, this gives me remembrance due to the fact that both scenes have a strong capitol representative that cannot be reaped as they have.

In Katniss Everdeen’s evaluation, Gary Ross (director) makes use of camera angles to efficently show the theme of Rich vs Poor. We see this is shown walking into the scene with a high angle shot, shrouded without light. High angle shots are used to make the subject look small; weak, and the high angle shot used represents the view from Katniss’s evaluators, who are from the Capitol. This makes the audience think that Katniss’s evaluators, wealthy Hunger Games officials from the Capitol, are more powerful than Katniss, a hunter from the most impoverished district in Panem. Ross made use of juxtaposition to put forward the idea that those from the Capitol hold great power over those from the 12 districts of Panem.

In Rue’s death Gary Ross (Director) makes great use of the medium shot. We see this as Katniss mourns over Rue. The medium shot is used to start an engagement, it is more for informing the audience instead of showing the emotion. Also this shot shows how casual it would be if people were having a conversation. This makes us understand that Katniss is emotional and connects to other people who have helped her, Katniss is selfless and puts others before herself. The director did this to show Katniss can be very emotional when the time comes for it. Combined with this was the low dim lighting to increase the sorrow in the scene. This reminds me of when Katniss volunteered for tribute to save her sister, towards the end of the volunteer scene she puts up the 3 Finger salute just like the end of Rue’s death to symbolize the Hope & Rebellion.

Music - A Change Is Gonna Come

 What is it about?

Just before the song was to be released as a single in December of 1964, Sam Cooke would be shot to death at a motel in Los Angeles. Guralnick says "A Change Is Gonna Come" is now much more than a civil rights anthem. It's become a universal message of hope, one that does not age.

Who is Sam Cooke? Sam Cooke, byname of Samuel Cook, (born January 22, 1931, Clarksdale, Mississippi, U.S.—died December 11, 1964, Los Angeles, California), American singer, songwriter, producer, and entrepreneur who was a major figure in the history of popular music and, along with Ray Charles, one of the most influential Black Artists.

What did you think?

The song was kinda catchy it wasn't my type of song but it was pretty cool I liked the melody of the song.

Hunger Games Angles, Movements and Shots

 Hunger Games

Brainstorm:

What is happening in the shot?

What theme does it link too?

Angles/shots used

How does the viewer feel?

Why did the director do this?

Additional info- music/lighting/colour

First Image

  • Dutch Tilt- Something is not right and to induce nausea
  • Low Angle-Make someone look more powerful
  • Mid Shot-To start engaging the characters used to show the face, scene, body/body language background and other.
  • The scene- Katniss Everdeen stands for tribute because she does not wanna lose her sister Primrose Everdeen.
  • Theme- Struggle for power- Prim and Katniss are helpless towards the reaping. Rich vs Poor- Effie is in rich, exquisite, vibrant  materialised clothing while Katniss wears a dull basic dress. Effie Also has makeup and a products in her hair meanwhile Katniss has no makeup and products on her at all. This is a prime example of Rich vs Poor as District 12 has citizens scared of the reaping whereas Effie and people from the Capitol have immunity to being reaped and put into the Hunger Games. Hope & Rebellion - This is part of the begging to hope and rebellion as District 12 presents to us the 3 finger salute Katniss is about to be escorted out. This is sort of used to mourn her chances of winning and the fact she may not come back alive.
  • How do we feel? We are meant to feel the same feelings of Katniss which is dizziness, sadness and sorrow. The director also implements us to feel admiration as Katniss steps up for her sister. The director used dutch tilts mid shots and to present nausea and set the scene with body language and facial expression.
Directors Purpose - Katniss knows how to use a bow this is important is because she knows how to hunt and may be able to survive the hunger games. This also tells shes selfless because she chooses Herself over her Sister

Music Glory

Who wrote the song and what is it called? The song is called Glory and it is written by John Legend and Common.

What is the purpose of the song Glory? Info Link

This motivational anthem was recorded by John Legend and Common for the American historical drama film Selma. The movie recounts the three 1965 Selma to Montgomery voting rights marches that lead to President Lyndon Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

What did you take from the song? I learned the song was made for the movie Selma. Selma displayed The marches organized by nonviolent activists to demonstrate the desire of African-American citizens to exercise their constitutional right to vote, in defiance of segregationist repression; they were part of a broader voting rights movement underway in Selma and throughout the American South.
