How does music enhance the story?

Keywords - Major, Minor, Tempo, Dynamics, Diegetic Sound.

Brainstorm:

What is happening in the scene?

Describe shot/angles, lighting/colour.

Describe the music used- Major/Minor, tempo, dynamics.

What is the effect on the viewer?

Why do you think the director chose to use this music?

Major Key- Happy, Energetic and Uplifting

Minor key- Sad, lethargic, creepy, angry

Tempo- the speed of the music/fast slow beat

Dynamics- Volume- Loud=Forte, quiet=piano.

Crescendo- Starts off quiet and gets louder, builds tension

Melancholic- Sad

Diminuendo- Starts loud the gets quieter, can be relaxing, make focus , bring down energy

Diegetic Sound- Natural occured audio.

Non Dietgetic Sound- Sound music, or anything sounds added to the scene.

Song 1 - Happy, Relaxing, Upbeat - Fast Tempo

Song 2-  Melancholic, Somber - Slower Tempo

Reaping scene:

Major/Minor

Tempo- Fast/slow/moderate

Dynamics- Crescendo

Description- Starts off quiet and gets louder, slow tempo, minor key.

Effect on Viewer- Hopeful, anxious, scared.

Director Purpose- Put in us in the mood of the children in district 12.

Rues Farewell-

What happens in this scene-Rue is put to rest, dies by a spear. This makes us happy.

Major/Minor-Minor

Tempo- Snails pace slow

Dynamics-Diminuendo

Effect on the viewer- Sorrow, depressed, Melancholic

Directors Purpose- This is done because someone has just passed away, and they were close to the protagonist Katniss Everdeen, Katniss cares because noone volunteered as a tribute for Rue.

In the scene where Rue dies, the technique of music is used to effectively to show the theme of 'Hope and Rebellion'. In this scene we see Rue put to rest by Katniss after she is impaled with a spear by another tribute. The music used makes the audience feel depressed, sorrowful and melancholic through the use of minor chords a slow tempo, and rising falling dynamics. The purpose is too show the relationship between Katniss and Rue. They are friends and Katniss sees Rue like her sister Primrose Everdeen. This works well with the use of the three finger salute which is a symbol of hope from Katniss's District. This shows hope and rebellion as a result of Katniss's actions, the people of District 11 start rioting against the Peace Keepers.
