Brainstorm:

What is happening in the scene?

What types of costumes are used in the location?

What effects does this have on the viewer?

Why has the director used these costumes?

What other techniques add to this effect?

The Reaping Scene District 12

The people in district 12 are waiting to be reaped. Description - Old worn out, faded dark colour, used for reaping, doesn't get damaged by the dark colour. In they're best form of clothes to be able to presented in front of the Capitol and the rich, instead of looking poor in front of the others. Men wearing white button up shirts, trousers for older men and shorts for the kids. Women are wearing dresses that go past the knees but not any longer to hit the floor. Hair for men is combed over or slicked back, women hair is all done properly. No accessories on because they are not needed.

Effect on the viewer- It tells us they are poor and only have the basic clothes that are worn and colour faded. They want to be viewed as mannerly, respectful people instead of just coal miners.

Directors Purpose- To show the difference between the Capitol and the districts, The Capitol has wealth and privilege as they have better clothes and variety that has many selection.

Techniques- A wide shot and high angle are used to portray them as weak an vulnerable, it also emphasises the Capitol is more rich and poor looking down at the districts and the wide shot shows them as many.

Arrival Scene- The Capitol residents are waiting for the tributes to arrive.
Describe-Colourful, Vibrant, Exotic, immaculate, co-ordinate, variety. Women wearing colourful vibrant dresses, variety of style, Men wearing suits, skirts, Accessories- Dyed Dogs, Head wear, Hand bags, Make up, earrings. Accessories aren't limited to Gender .
Effect on the viewer-They are wealthy with power privilege and opportunity, not poor, born into wealth and not worried about reaping and working.
Directors Purpose-To highlight the luxuriousness of the Capitol.
Techniques- The setting is, modern vibrant, light, modern architecture, stones, metal, steel, fresh new futuristic

In the reaping scene, costumes are used efficiently to show the theme of 'Rich vs Poor'. In this case 'rich vs poor' means the privilege afforded to people in Panam based on their district. This is demonstrated by the clothing worn by the residents of District 12 during the annual reaping. The clothes uniform like, well worn and bland colours, whilst girls are wearing skirts and or dresses. These are examples of they're best clothing which tells us that they are poor limited to there access to resources. This makes the audience think that although they are poor and can only afford the basics they want to be seen as respectable by the Capitol and other Districts, not just as coal miners. This was done to show the difference between the Capitol and the other Districts- The Capitol has wealth and privilege whilst the people in the Districts have to make do with what they have. This worked well with the use of camera angles. In this shot a high angle and wide shot is used to show the people of district 12 are weaker and more vulnerable under the power of those in the Capitol. This can be juxtaposed to the use of costumes in the Capitol where we see rich vs poor through the extravagance and luxury of the citizens costumes.
