Hunger Games
Brainstorm:
What is happening in the shot?
What theme does it link too?
Angles/shots used
How does the viewer feel?
Why did the director do this?
Additional info- music/lighting/colour
First Image
- Dutch Tilt- Something is not right and to induce nausea
- Low Angle-Make someone look more powerful
- Mid Shot-To start engaging the characters used to show the face, scene, body/body language background and other.
- The scene- Katniss Everdeen stands for tribute because she does not wanna lose her sister Primrose Everdeen.
- Theme- Struggle for power- Prim and Katniss are helpless towards the reaping. Rich vs Poor- Effie is in rich, exquisite, vibrant materialised clothing while Katniss wears a dull basic dress. Effie Also has makeup and a products in her hair meanwhile Katniss has no makeup and products on her at all. This is a prime example of Rich vs Poor as District 12 has citizens scared of the reaping whereas Effie and people from the Capitol have immunity to being reaped and put into the Hunger Games. Hope & Rebellion - This is part of the begging to hope and rebellion as District 12 presents to us the 3 finger salute Katniss is about to be escorted out. This is sort of used to mourn her chances of winning and the fact she may not come back alive.
- How do we feel? We are meant to feel the same feelings of Katniss which is dizziness, sadness and sorrow. The director also implements us to feel admiration as Katniss steps up for her sister. The director used dutch tilts mid shots and to present nausea and set the scene with body language and facial expression.
Paragraph
In the reaping scene, camera angles and shots are used efficiently to show the theme of 'Rich vs Poor' In this scene Katniss Everdeen volunteers as tribute to save her sister, this means she must fight in the hunger games. A low angle, dutch tilt is used to show Katniss and Effie Trinket standing on the stage after Katniss volunteers. This is used to make the audience feel dizzy like Katniss who has just chosen to give her life over her sisters Primrose Everdeen. The low angle shot makes the viewer feel weak and vulnerable like the kids watching in District 12. The director did this too help create a bond with the audience and Katniss, this is used to understand the choices of why she makes certain decisions in the film later on. This also shows the theme of Rich vs Poor because the people of the districts have to struggle with the reality of losing family whereas Capitol citizens and representatives don't have to worry about the reaping. Combined with this is the use of costumes. We see the privilege of Capitol citizens in the bright, exotic, and colourful clothing worn by Effie which contrasted to the worn and faded outfits of those in District 12.Overall, the reaping scene shows us Rich vs Poor because it emphasises the privileges of the Capitol and the power they have over the Districts
